Pelindo 1 continues to accelerate the development of Kuala Tanjung Port and Industrial Estate (PIE) by developing the great potential of Kuala Tanjung Industrial Zone to boost national economic growth. The effort was made through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pelindo 1 through its subsidiary, PT Prima Pengembangan Kawasan (PPK) with Union Resources & Engineering Co., Ltd (UREC) on land use and infrastructure in Kuala Tanjung Industrial Estate on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, in Grha Pelindo Satu Medan.
The signing was done by President Director of PT PPK, Jansen Sitohang with Chief Representative of Jakarta Office, Indonesia UREC Co., Ltd, Meng Zhanqian witnessed by President Director of Pelindo 1, Prasetyo and Technical Director of Pelindo 1 who is also a Commissioner of PT PPK, Hosadi Apriza Putra. The scope of this cooperation covers the utilization of land and basic infrastructure that will be provided by Pelindo 1 through its subsidiary, PT PPK for the development of UREC’s copper smelter in Kuala Tanjung Industrial Estate. This copper smelter will be built in an area of 100 ha integrated with the port.
“Kuala Tanjung is in a very strategic position, in the middle of the main strait of Malacca so that the existence of Kuala Tanjung Port and Industrial Estate (PIE) has great potential as an important node in the global logistics and supply chain. So Kuala Tanjung will be the future port of Indonesia,” explained President Director of Pelindo 1, Prasetyo.
Prasetyo added that Pelindo 1 has conducted global logistics cooperation with a number of strategic partners to accelerate the development of Kuala Tanjung PIE. In developing Kuala Tanjung PIE which consists of two integrated parts between the port area (Kuala Tanjung Multipurpose Terminal) and industrial area (Kuala Tanjung Industrial Zone), Pelindo 1 will partner with Zhejiang Seaport and Port Rotterdam as the largest port operators in Asia and Europe by having a global logistics network. Not only that, the government also fully supports and encourages Pelindo 1 to accelerate the development of industrial areas.
The development of Kuala Tanjung PIE is marked by the operation of Kuala Tanjung Multipurpose Terminal (KTMT) since 2019 which is projected as the Next Indonesia’s Logistic and Supply Chain Hub, the port is designed to accommodate large ships weighing 50,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) as well as various types of cargo, from containers, liquid bulk, to general cargo.
As for Kuala Tanjung Industrial Zone (KTIZ) developed in an area of 3,400 ha with the potential of diverse industrial segments, both port associate industry, and non-port associate industry, among others: aluminum, palm oil, iron & steel, rubber, petrochemical, food products, and other industrial segments. This area will also be strengthened by the availability of various support services such as bunkering service, logistic service, and warehousing, as well as equipped with the provision of electricity, gas pipelines, clean water, waste management, and other utility networks.
“We are grateful to UREC who chose Kuala Tanjung Industrial Estate to build the smelter, we will prepare resources to continue supporting its development. With the presence of UREC in Kuala Tanjung, we hope that in the future more and more investors will enter the Kuala Tanjung Industrial Estate which has a strategic location with an integrated transportation network connected in the form of Trans-Sumatra toll road and railway network, as well as located on the island of Sumatra which has three major ports namely Belawan Port, Dumai, and Kuala Tanjung,” explained Prasetyo.
Kuala Tanjung PIE is also integrated and directly connected to Sei Mangkei Industrial Estate, which is an industrial area that first existed in North Sumatra and has been designated as a Special Economic Zone (KEK). In addition, Kuala Tanjung PIE will also apply the concept of smart port and smart industrial area. This is supported by the planning of the implementation of IoT (Internet of Things) and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in the region so that it will become a modern industrial area on an International scale.
“We are very happy to work with Pelindo 1 in utilizing land and infrastructure in Kuala Tanjung Industrial Estate. UREC will build a copper smelter, this will be the second development in Indonesia after Gresik, East Java. Not only smelter development, we are also ready to synergize with Pelindo 1 to conduct other cooperation by seeing the potentials of cooperation that we have,” explained The Chief Representative of Jakarta Office, Indonesia UREC Co., Ltd, Meng Zhanqian.
