Jakarta (ANTARA) – PT Pelabuhan Indonesia 1 (Persero) is collaborating with the Port of Rotterdam and Zhejiang Provincial Seaport Investment & Operation Group Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang) to develop the Kuala Tanjung Port and Industrial Estate (Kuala Tanjung PIE), North Sumatra.
Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said in a press release in Jakarta on Friday that the signing of their memorandum of understanding (MoU) was a new chapter for the development of Kuala Tanjung.
“I am optimistic that the performance of Kuala Tanjung port can continue to improve so that I hope that this port can provide maximum economic impact, reduce logistics costs and improve Indonesia’s logistics competitiveness with other countries,” said Budi Karya.
The Minister of Transportation added that this cooperation effort is also in line with the government’s commitment to fully support and directly control the development of Kuala Tanjung which has been designated as a national strategic project.
Meanwhile, the President Director of Pelindo 1 Prasetyo explained the signing of the MoU and Term Sheet cooperation that will accelerate the development of Kuala Tanjung PIE and will also realize Kuala Tanjung PIE as Indonesia’s Logistic and Supply Chain Hub.
“We are also confident that Kuala Tanjung PIE will be one of the new economic gateways in ASEAN and an important node in the global trade and logistics network connecting Europe and Asia,” Prasetyo said.
Prasetyo said that the development of Kuala Tanjung PIE on the main strait of Malacca and the cross of 25 percent of world trade commodities will make Kuala Tanjung PIE’s position more strategic and potentially an important node in the logistics and global network.
Kuala Tanjung is also integrated and directly connected to Sei Mangkei Industrial Estate and has been designated as a Special Economic Zone (KEK).
The signing of the MoU was carried out by Pelindo 1 Director of Business Transformation and Development Joko Noerhudha, Director of PT Pelabuhan Rotterdam Indonesia Andre G. F. Toet, and Assistant General Manager of Zhejiang Provincial Seaport Investment & Operation Group Co., Ltd. Shi Jianjie.
The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi and attended by Vice Minister of SOE II Kartika Wirjoatmodjo and other related invitations.
